Enharmonic Equivalents
We know that F sharp is one semitone (half step) higher than F (natural). But we also know that it’s one semitone lower than G natural, so we could also call the note G flat. An enharmonic equivalent is simply another way to “spell” the same note. F sharp and G flat are “enharmonic equivalents”.
Why is F sharp the same as G flat?
Both keys are enharmonic (i.e. they sound the same) but the key signature of F# has 6 #’s, while the key of Gb has 6 flats. Harmonically, the V chord in F# is C#: (spelled C#-E#-G#), the V chord in Gb is Db: (spelled Db-Fb-Ab). So they sound the same, but function differently in the notation.
